Friday Findings
I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
Can You Tell Me How to Get…How to Get to Sesame Street?
Why, yes – yes I can!
I’ve always loved Sesame Street; I think because it was “born” the same year I was – 1969. As such, any news about Big Bird, Oscar, Grover and all their friends always catches my eye. Recently, I was delighted to stumble across this Lonely Planet article – there is now an actual Sesame Street, in New York City! And The cast were all there, for the big unveiling! Check out this fun article, here: Sunny Days……Chasing the Clouds Away…..
Fellowship
On Mother’s Day, my crew took me to the movies to watch Tolkien; a biopic film and JRR Tolkien’searly years – grammar school, university, the war…and some of the events in his life that fostered the imagination needed to write The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. I thoroughly enjoyed it – a great movie.
I also enjoyed reading Brett McCracken’s article over at The Gospel Coalition, about the role that fellowship had in Tolkien’s life…and the necessity and dying art form that it is in our world today. We have never been more connected, yet so disconnected, as we are today. Yet God created us for fellowship; and both Tolkien’s life and C.S. Lewis’ life bare witness to that fact. Check out the article here (and, may I add – I agree with McCracken that I long for an Inklings move someday.): Fellowship Before the Fellowship
Design; and the Impact of Poor Design
I have never really given much thought to design. Sure, I appreciate a well-thought out product: a chair that is supportive yet comfortable, my beloved mechanical keyboard with just the right amount of loud clickiness to it, my Purple mattress. But design isn’t something I think deeply about. However, there are some who do, and Don Norman – the 83-year-old author of the Desing of Everyday Things book, does. And, as he is aging, he is realizing just how terribly things are designed for our older generations. He’s had the ear of companies for years, and he’s earned the right to speak plainly – and he does here; calling corporations out (such as Apple) for poor design and lack of thought when it comes to products. He also talks about the need to remove the medical look from assistive devices – that hospital look places an undue and unnecessary and unfair stigma on our older citizens. Take a moment to read this great piece, and then take a look around your house or office; you won’t see things quite the same way again: Design Well
The WOW Kid
Last, I’ll leave you with this piece of loveliness. During a recent Mozart concern, following a particularly moving piece – and much to the delight of the entire audience and orchestra – a little guy yelled “WOW” after the final note – in complete awe and appreciation of what he had just heard. I’ve added the brief clip below; I think you will enjoy it, dear reader. And thanks to the power of social media, the Wow Kid has been found – and I enjoyed reading about him at the WGBG website: WOW
Have a beautiful weekend.
