Friday Findings
I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
Europe’s Oldest Intact Book – The Gospel of John
I love old books. A dear friend passed several very old books on to me a couple of years ago, and I have so enjoyed them – reading the writings, enjoying the covers and artwork, the marginalia, the fragile pages. I’ve enjoyed researching some of them – authors, details – and all of that has led me to research just old books in general.
Came across this great story about the oldest intact book in Europe, and its history. It’s the book of John, and it was found inside the coffin of a monk who had died in 687. As the story goes, the legend was that this guys remains were incorruptible, so people would place offerings around his tomb. No one is sure how the book got into the coffin, but they think it happened between 700 & 800 AD.
What is so remarkable is its condition – it is 1300 years old – and it is in great shape. The article goes into detail on the binding, and the pouch the gospel was in when found. Very cool stuff, and this article contains a link to actual scans of both pages and the binding (don’t miss that part!): Stonyhurst Gospel
In more “Old Things News”: Mom, I Think I Found Iron Man’s Sword
Oh, wait. Nope – not Iron Man’s Sword, but maybe a sword from the Iron Age.
That’s exactly what an 8-year-old girl found in Sweden’s Lake Vidostern. 1,500 years old – and also well-preserved. Guess little Saga Vanecek wins the prize for best “Show-and-Tell” item at school: Really Old Sword
Information is Beautiful Awards 2018 – Long List
I always look forward to this: The website “Information is Beautiful” has list its long list of finalists for this years IIB 2018 awards. Finalist for what? Data visualization and infographics. IIB searches out people who are presenting data in unusual and beautiful ways. The Interactive Infographics are always my favorite, but there are many other methods and mediums. I could spend hours looking through their long list – be sure to check out the Entymological Map of Africa (Maps, Places & Spaces), Tornado Migration (Maps, Places & Spaces), The Safest Skies Record (Science & Technology), and the entire category of Art, Entertainment & Culture: Information Really is Beautiful
Compassionate Pizza
If you’ve visited this space before, you may know that I love to travel. Love it. However, if you’ve ever traveled frequently, you know that there can be some really bad travel days. I’ve had my share.
In early September, an American Airlines flight endured one of those “bad travel days”, due to severe weather diverting their flight to a small airport in Wichita Falls, TX. I’ve been to Wichita Falls. Not somewhere I want to be stuck at overnight, at an airport.
The captain and his flight crew went over and above the call of duty, to care for their passengers, including ordering 40 pizzas from Papa Johns to feed them all. You can read the great article here, and then watch the video below – and then I challenge you to find one way that you can go over and above the call of duty in your workplace, to care for someone this next week: Hello, Papa Johns? Do you deliver to runways?
