Friday Findings
I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
Notre Dame
I think the entire world mourned as the majestic Notre Dame cathedral in Paris burned earlier this week. In the wake of that tragedy, several fascinating articles were posted to help us learn more about this historic and iconic landmark, which dates back to 1160 AD. Here is a sampling:
- 9 Things You Should Know About Notre Dame Cathedral (The Gospel Coalition)
- Photograph of Notre Dame from 1838 (Open Culture)
- Virtual Time-Lapse Recreation of the Building of Notre Dame (Open Culture)
Kansas City!
I love Kansas City, so I was excited when Google featured KC in this week’s Arts and Culture Highlights. Home to BBQ, a vast array of Arts…from Blues & Jazz to Ballet, City of Fountains, Home of the 3 Major League Sporting teams, including my beloved CHIEFs!
If you’ve never thought of visiting Kansas City, give it some consideration – I think you will be pleasantly surprised! Check it out here, to get started on your research: Google Features Kansas City!
Latest in Everest News
I think I shared an article in recent weeks, about the devastating impact that trash is having on Mount Everest, as more and more people try to climb the majestic peak. It’s tragic, and there are several groups trying to clean up the base camp site, as well as shed light on the issue.
This week, Lonely Planet announced that the Chinese government has taken the drastic measure of closing Tibet’s Everest Base Camp to all tourists. Now, only official climbers with permits can approach from the Tibet side. Tourists can still reach the more popular Nepalese Base Camp, but that does require a week-long trek: Clean-Up Everest
Book Recommendation: Suffering is Never for Nothing by Elisabeth Elliott
Goodness, my soul – I can not recommend this book by Elisabeth Elliott high enough. You may recognize her name: Elisabeth was widowed at a young age, when her husband was killed by the Auca tribe he was trying to share the gospel with. Elisabeth died in 2015, and these words that have recently been published, have not been published previously. It is short – a scant 128 pages – but it is packed with truth: sometimes hard and jarring, sometimes comforting – but all pointing toward our only hope in the midst of suffering. I do not shed tears often; and yet I found myself nearly weeping within just a few pages. Don’t miss this one: Suffering is Never for Nothing
Easter Week Timeline
Today is Maundy Thursday, tomorrow is Good Friday. Saturday is Silent Saturday, and then Sunday – beautiful Resurrection Sunday.
The folks at The Gospel Coalition provide a helpful and informative Easter Week Timeline each year. I always appreciate being able to use it in my personal studies and spiritual disciplines during the week leading up to Easter Sunday. Hopefully you, too, will find it helpful, dear reader: The Road to Resurrection Joy
Forever He is Glorified
I’ll leave you this week with the song “Forever”, as sung by Kari Jobe. Looking forward to singing these words on Sunday morning, with unconstrained joy at what my Savior has done for me.
