Friday Findings
I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
Note: I’ve been buried at work for the past few months; so Friday Findings fell to the wayside for a bit – I’m glad to be back, dear reader, and hope you enjoy today’s offerings!
Cricket Rampage
A. I didn’t know you could order live crickets from the interwebz. B. But now I am really tempted to give it a try. Check out this chuckle-worthy account of when a Washington Post reporter ordered internet crickets for his kid’s bearded dragon: Cricket Plague
Charles Barkley’s Friend from Iowa
This story. I read it at least 3 times – that’s how much I loved it. Maybe it is because I grew up in Iowa. Maybe because I watched Barkley play bball; back in the Michael Jordan era when I actually paid attention to the NBA. Or, maybe it is because I love the humanity of it. Either way, this is one of the best mainstream stories I’ve read in a while. The author’s dad, who is (or was) a cat litter scientist in Muscatine, Iowa….just your typical, run-of-the-mill midwestern guy, because good friends with Charles Barkley. Good enough that, when Barkley’s mom died in 2015, this Iowan went to the funeral. I think that I love it so much, because every one needs a friend like Lin Wang – even Charles Barkley. This is well worth your time to read: My Dad’s Friendship with Charles Barkley
Morning Routines
My morning routine is hugely important to me. I have a very set way that I start each morning; and when I can’t accomplish my morning routine for one reason or another, it seriously throws me “off” for the rest of the day. Because I’m so committed to my daily routine, I always love reading about other people’s morning routines. Here’s a great article from the New York Times, about the morning routines of high achievers: Learning from 300 High Achievers and their Routines
The author of the article has also written a book about his interviews – I’ve not read it yet, but I have it on my to-read list: My Morning Routine
Best Books of 2018
One of my favorite parts of December each year, is combing through everyone’s “Best Books I Read This Year” lists. It’s become quite a thing, and each year it seems that more and more people take the time to post their favorite books. I typically collect them all in one file, and then go through and look for books that I may want to add to my reading list for the upcoming year. Yeah, nerdy – I know. Can’t help it.
I had planned on compiling a large sampling of links to those lists and sharing that compilation here with you, my friends – but, alas – my work schedule co-opted that plan.
But – it’s all good, because Tim Challies, one of my favorite long-time bloggers, has done the work for us – and in much better fashion than I ever could! (Thanks, buddy; appreciated!) Check out his compilation of compilations of the Best Christian Books of 2018: What Will You Read Next?
Another individual whose “Best of…” lists that I earnestly watch for each year, is from Russell Moore. There is always something on his list, that catches my eye: RM’s Favorite Books of 2018
And, I always like to check out mainstream lists as well – here is the 2018 Best Books list from the New York Times critics: 2018 Fiction and Non-Fiction – Top Books
