God, we pray to you, on this very ordinary Monday.
Oh, for some people, it will not be ordinary. But for the vast majority of us, it is ordinary.
And our week stretches before us with tasks and to-do-lists and meetings and the need to cook dinner and watch children and do our jobs well.
And so, dear God, we need endurance.
This passage, in Hebrews 10, God, is not nothing; regardless of whether our day is ordinary, or extraordinary. Regardless of whether we are facing suffering such as the audience of these words, (but, truly, are we not the audience as well, as long as we keep the context; historically and culturally, intact?) or whether our day is filled with laundry:
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
38 but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
Sometimes, God, our confidence wavers, and we throw it away.
Not our self-confidence; God forbid. But, rather, our confidence that we find in our souls because you alone are our confidence.
Help us to not throw that away. Help us to stake our flag deep into the soil of the confidence you give us, help us to “Stand Fast in the Lord”, as we read in 1 Thessalonians 3.
Our confidence, when found in you, has great reward.
And, we long for that confidence; we yearn for it; we have need of it.
We have need of it, so we can do that which you have for us to do; be it ministry, or cleaning toilets, or traveling for work, or writing a book, or parenting well.
And, what is it, that is promised by you, O God, for those who are called your children?
“Yet a little while—-the coming one will come….and will not delay.”
We long for that day, not only when we find ourselves in the dark valley of the shadow of death, or in our most despairing moments, or in the middle of the night when the walls are closing in on us…
We long for your coming even in the ordinary, kid-chauffeuring, presentation-giving, yard-work doing days.
These words right here, God:
…my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
What does that look like, to live by faith?
I am not entirely sure, but I know that it is no less than the active pursuit to know You, God, and to be obedient to scripture.
But, we are not capable of doing that, on our own. I know I am not. I certainly have tried, and failed, often enough to know that I am not.
And yet, I still try, apart from You, to produce that faith.
But slowly I am learning; we are learning; that our faith comes from you, as a gift.
So God, please, grant us that faith. And thank you for that faith.
I do not want to shrink back; even though it is so easy to do so. To fall into old habits of cynicism and doubt.
Give us faith.
Give me faith.
Because in shrinking back, destruction comes.
But in standing fast, we are preserved.
Oh, God. We pray.
We long for your return.
We plead for the gift of faith.
We plead for your help, in not shrinking back to old ways.
We thank you for the confidence that is only found in you–the confidence that, in turn, allows us to stand fast.
Yet a little while, God….yet a little while.
