I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
That Time When Tolkien was Snubbed…
Open Culture featured a delightful article about J.R.R. Tolkien and his Lord of the Rings trilogy. Apparently, the Nobel Prize committee wasn’t too fond of his Still-Classic-Today Fantasy writings and passed him over for that illustrious award. Better yet, it seems as though society responded to the Tomes with mediocre reviews. I particularly loved that Tolkien’s friend. C.S. Lewis, apparently went to bat repeatedly to try to promote the Lord of the Rings books. How delightful it is that his harshest critics were wrong, and these books still delight today! Saving Hawaiian Sign Language
I love the culture of Hawaii – the people, the traditions, the dialects, the aloha spirit. Because of that, I enjoyed reading about Hawaiian Sign Language (HSL), something I was not familiar with before.
When we lived on the island of Oahu, I drove by the School for the Deaf property often. Reading this CNN article and watching the fascinating accompanying video, I learned of the history of what took place at this school….and the beauty and importance of preserving HSL. You can read the article by clicking here, or take 10 minutes and view the video below….it also includes beautiful footage of Hawaii Nei. Saving HSL
2022 Colors
I am not an arts and crafts kinda gal. I have absolutely no patience for it. No creativity. No skills. Give me a book over a hot glue gun any day.
However, I am weirdly fascinated each year by the Colors chosen to hold the title “Color of the Year”. What cracks me up even more, is that each paint company chooses their own color of the year…..so, like, there’s no real winner. A beauty of popularity contest, with a gazillion First Place Winners and no Runners Up…..I don’t know why that makes me chuckle.
Anyway, if you love color, or if you are an oddball like me and want to see which hues are the hues of all hues for 2022 (work with me here, ‘hue’ and ‘two’ rhyme, right??) – you can satisfy your curiosity by visiting the Better Homes and Garden Website, who has cheerfully gathered the intel for the rest of us. Thanks, BH&G!

Linda Belden says
The colors of the year are all kind of blah, except for the first two! Of course, I do like muted indoor colors….and how interesting that Tolkein was panned for the Nobel Prize. It just goes to show that popularity isn’t a good judge of talent or worth…
Always love your words, Shelly…
