Friday Findings
I’m a curious soul – with a wide range of nerdy and geeky interests, ranging from space exploration to theological concepts. I often find interesting items when stumbling about on the internet – and on Friday’s I like to share my findings with you!
Living that Yurt Life
One of my goals on my 101 Things in 1001 Days is to stay in a Yurt. What’s a Yurt? It’s a, um, round lodging structure. I think they must be trendy right now or something – regardless, I want to see what the hype is all about. There is a Yurt at one of the parks in our county that we could rent…but where’s the fun in that? Instead, I want to check out these Hobbit Houses and Yurts in Canada’s Upper Laurentian Mountains. It’s not too terribly far from where I often have to travel to for work – so, this may actually happen one weekend. Check them out – you may get a yearning for a Yurt stay as well: Yurtle Yurtle
Frozen Niagara
Not “too” terribly far from the Yurts (about 8 hours) is Niagara Falls – and since visiting it for the first time ever this past year, I’m always interested to read any articles about the falls and the area that I happen to stumble upon. With the recent Polar Vortex and bone-chilling temps, Niagara Falls is experiencing some serious freezing, resulting in some stunning pics: Frozen Water
Daily Habit Tracker – Trello
I’ll always look for ways to promote Trello – the Project Management Tool has become an integral part of my daily routine – inside it, I plan everything from work travel to vacations to holiday events to shopping lists and daily to-dos. I like finding new ways to use Trello, or to improve my existing Trello boards, so I frequently visit the Trello Blog. We are getting ready to take some time off of work, and one of my goals is to take the suggestions in this article and revise my Goals Board in Trello: Trello is Better than Jello
Come Thou Fount
I love hymns, and Come Thou Fount is one that I enjoy singing – probably because I often feel as if I could have written these words, because I live them nearly every day:
Oh, to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be
Let that goodness like a fetter
Bind my wandering heart to Thee
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it
Prone to leave the God I love
Here’s my heart, oh, take and seal it
Seal it for Thy courts above ~ Robinson, 1757
I enjoyed this article from David Mathis at Desiring God, about the song – and his explanation of what an “Ebenezer” is, which is a word used in the second verse: Ebenezer Stone
Iowa Ice Mess
And, if you weren’t cold enough already – out of Iowa this past week, I’ve seen several videos of the ice jam break up on the river. This was something we always enjoyed watching – it’s fascinating, but it also does a lot of damage to bridges, and can create flooding. It’s also eerie – when the ice breaks up, it can make very loud, very apocalyptic sounds….not that I know what apocalyptic sounds are. Anyway, enjoy this video and be glad that you were not out in the middle of the river, when the ice started to break up (be sure to watch a bit – when they pan to the shoreline, you can get a sense for how fast the ice/river is moving):
