About 7-8 years ago, coming to the recognition of the truth of scripture and the subsequent invitation to form prayers to God, based on scripture, was one of a few key catalysts in prompting a move toward salvation in my life. So, when I saw that Dr. Don Whitney had written a book about just that–the praying of scripture–I was eager to see what he had to say. I am grateful to have received it from Crossway, for review purposes.
I have a tremendous amount of respect for Dr. Whitney, having served on staff with him for a brief period of time, in an inner-city church in Kansas City. At the time, I didn’t fully recognize what a privilege it was to sit under his leadership–we were struggling, busy, and tired seminary students raising 3 children with another on the way–but today I fully recognize it. This man is very, very wise.
Not only is he wise; he is passionate about scripture and spiritual disciplines. That was evident in those early years–I distinctly recall him teaching his 3-year-old daughter scripture and hymns. But it is also evident in his writings today. One can read his passion for God’s word behind every word written in this book.
Dr. Whitney has written a very graspable and down-to-earth “manual” of sorts, on praying scripture. But–and this is key–he doesn’t just tell you how to pray scripture, he tells you why. And, I have found for me, personally, that when I have a better grasp of “why”, then I understand the “how” so much better, and am more committed to it.
I am grateful for this book, and have shared it with a small number of others, as I’ve worked with them on developing spiritual blessings in their lives. It is a fantastic resource to get into the hands of others that one mentors, teaches or counsels.
